The 500+ billion in FX is a pittance for a country its size and a lot of that money is hot money held by overseas Indians who could take it out at any time. In addition, india does not make the vast majority of goods that it needs. Imports rule. That's why India runs a trade deficit with so many countries and overall. 500B can disappear in a matter of a few months.
