Tibet was squarely ruled by the Yuan dynasty in the 13 century, then became independent before being conquered again by the Qing Dynasty in the 1700s. That lasted till China lost a war to Japan in 1895. China merely took it back after after Japan lost in ww2. So, China and India did have a shared border for many centuries although I am not sure your northern India looked like what it is today
