  1. The middle east (pre and post Islam establishment) suffered what all middlemen suffer from ultimately ... Disintermediation. For a long time they acted as middlemen for Chinese (and to a lesser extent Indian) goods flowing to the Roman Empire and beyond. Silk, paper, procelain, tea, lacquer ware and many other things and knowledge. Also the other way around. That's one of the reasons the Roman Empire never met imperial China despite both knowing about each other and tried all kinds of ways to go direct.
