  2. It DOES take enormous mental effort. That's why the ones who get away with horrible things for so long are the smart ones. They need the processing speed high intelligence grants to mask with different people and come up with lies at the drop of a hat. The dumb ones get caught right away and don't function in society. Also remember they are practicing these manipulative skills their whole lives--they are professionals.
