  4. More likely he was leveraging his assets to get the best possible outcome for his regime, not for Germany. In the end Germany lost much more than in 1919, the Potsdam Agreement was much worse than the Treaty of Versailles.

  6.  @rafa1z1  Today Germany gets oil from the Middle East, from Russia. But Hitler wanted Germany to be an autarky, without any imports of raw materials and fuel, thus he had to invade.

  7. Certainly the war would have been prolonged. Yes, the Axis would have lost eventually, but the carnage would have been much bigger.

  9. It was not in vain. If the Germans would have gained control of the Caucasus in 1942 the USSR would have lost a major source of oil and its war effort would have been crippled.
