Appeasement for China is going on for almost 50 years, since 1971 when the UN recognized the communists as legal representatives of China.

The Czechs had some strong fortifications on the border and had mountainous terrain to their advantage. However there were also some 3 million Germans living there that would not be friendly to the Czechs, while the Luftwaffe would have aerial superiority and the Wehrmacht would have many more tanks than the Czechs. The war would not be easy for the Czechoslovaks. Hungary too wanted a piece of Czechoslovakia (south Slovakia).
3
The British people too wanted peace in 1938, not just Chamberlain.
2
@czechpatriot2230 France alone didn't want to fight Germany in 1938 over Czechoslovakia, the French people too wanted peace.
2
In order to annex the Sudetenland with its 3 million Germans, but actually he wanted to occupy entire Czechoslovakia and obtain a better strategic position in central Europe.
2
But without WW1there would have been no independence for Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Finland, Yugoslavia, Hungary.
2
The German economy could have been saved if the Nazis were eliminated from power and the army kept in a tight leash with a drastically reduced budget and size.
2
It all depended on the will of the French and British peoples, they wanted peace in 1935. Thus even if the British and French governments would oppose Mussolini over Ethiopia, those government would still have to win the support of the people.
2
In 1938 Germany was not ready to attack the USSR, also Poland was in the way.
1
Coward? Why? He introduced rearmament in Britain, he declared war on Germany in 1939, he opposed Hitler in Norway in 1940 even if Britain was defeated there.
1
@TheImperatorKnight Could the prime minister go against the will of the people in 1938 and declare war on Germany? Didn't he need the backing of the Parliament?
1
@F22onblockland I understand what you say, in hindsight you could be right, but the fact remains that we have no way of knowing that the coup would have succeeded. In any case Chamberlain needed the support of the Parliament and the British people to stand against Hitler, and in 1938 they wanted peace by any means.
1
Italy alone was incapable of conquering Greece as was seen in 1940-1941 when Italy failed and needed German help. Maybe more colonies in Africa could have appeased Mussolini, but that would have meant less colonies for France or Britain.
1
@AntaraReis But would the Greeks accept to become a part of the Italian sphere of influence?
1
@ottoheinrichwehmann2252 Doesn't matter for you, but it did matter for all those new independent countries.
1
Germany had a big fuel crisis, she could not waste time fighting an attrition war in Czechoslovakia, Germany would need a fast victory otherwise the fuel crisis would get bigger even if Czechoslovakia would have been destroyed.
1
Chamberlain wasn't living in a vacuum, he needed the support of the British people and the Parliament. The British and French people wanted peace in 1938, they didn't want to go to war for Czechoslovakia's sake.
1
@joshthomas-moore2656 I am not talking about the British cabinet, I'm talking about the Parliament. Unless Chamberlain would gain support for war from the Parliament and the people, there would be no war in 1938.
1
@joshthomas-moore2656 He wasn't trying to get support for war because the people themselves didn't want war in 1938, it would have been political suicide to try to force the people to go to war.
1
@joshthomas-moore2656 The British people greeted Chamberlain as a hero after he returned from Munich, the King also treated Chamberlain as a hero, the crowds were on his side demanding peace. Of course not all people wanted peace, some marched to the streets demanding war. The mood changed after March 1939 and more after September 1939, by then the British people knew that Hitler could not be trusted.
1
@joshthomas-moore2656 Chamberlain was a politician, not a warmonger. Even if Hitler could not be trusted Chamberlain could not just go to war. As long as the people and the Parliament of Britain didn't want war over Czechoslovakia he could not declare war on Germany.
1
@joshthomas-moore2656 If everyone wanted war, why wasn't Chamberlain dismissed and replaced immediately with a more bellicose prime minister? Chamberlain was not irreplaceable. Why did he receive a hero's welcome after Munich 1938?
1
Chamberlain had no choice, Britain was not ready for war, the British people wanted peace in 1938. Chamberlain started rearmament in Britain but he needed more time.
1
@ajsimo2677 Yes, if he knew about the Oster Conspiracy perhaps he would have opposed Hitler at Munich. We will never know what would have happened. Maybe Chamberlain wanted his moment of glory, but the fact remains that in 1938 the British people wanted peace.

Afghanistan under Taliban regime helped Bin Laden, Taliban Afghanistan had its share of guilt in what happened at 9/11.
1
@voswouter87 Yes, Saudi Arabia too had its share of guilt by helping Bin Laden and Muslim extremists.
1
Keep in mind that even if Czechoslovakia went to war in 1938 victory was not guaranteed, in 1938 war would be different that in 1914 especially since the Germans would surely gain aerial supremacy over Czechoslovakia.
1
Yes, but war in 1938 would be different than in 1914, even if Czechoslovakia had fortifications the Germans had a more powerful air force, more tanks, they could strike behind Czechoslovak lines, and once they gained air superiority even supremacy they could force a surrender from the Czechoslovaks.
