 @JohnMoseley there's a difference? I'd say the difference between which and who and whose. I never liked calling people "that." it sounds so impersonal.

To the young'uns these days, many of them write in Roman letters instead of script letters anyway. So that wouldn't be a problem. What might be a problem is not having lower case and upper case, as so much of our language nuance is carried by upper case vs. Lower case.

@T-Tronic actually, that's tensile strength. Ductility is the ability of a substance to be drawn out in thin wires, like metals. Metals are characterized as being both ductile and malleable (can be hammered into thin sheets or foils).

No, you didn't mention an egg corn that I used. Some I did not know existed. The one that hurt me most is "chomping at the bit." It really is "champing at the bit." Ronald Reagan said "chomping at the bit," and it stuck. So many people say it because of him! It makes my heart hurt. But since horses champing is essentially munching on the bit in their mouth, chomping is not too far away. So it's an egg corn. 😭 And Reagan should have known better.

You missed an opportunity to make one: instead of "Give it a go," you could say, "give it a goal." or is that a malapropism? I claim it's an egg corn.

If Shakespeare coined all the words attributed to him, how would anyone have understood his plays to begin with? It would be gibberish to his audience! Shakespeare played with words. I've been told that 2,000-3,000 words is a large vocabulary. But then you've mentioned that he first put words onto paper. So we've already had much of these words in our vocabulary.

I've been learning Ukranian and their Cyrillic alphabet. I love it! I've always liked runes, too. It didn't take me long to recognize Cyrillic letters and their sounds, so learning runes for writing English would be easy enough to do, since a child learns their ABC's often enough before going to school. It would be exceptionally easy to sound out a word once you learned them.

This was a very painful one to me. But instead of "literally," I've taken to saying "truly" instead. I take offense at the word "bling." (even my Autocorrect doesn't like it.) I am sad people don't remember that "glitz" means the same thing. I also take offense at "could care less." no explanation needed. But it does remind me of a time when a lady mentioned she was "two sheets to the wind" and I laughed saying, "so you were not completely drunk?" (It's "three sheets to the wind" to those interested.) Unfortunately those are on their way to being skunked completely. I'm also sad the words I, like you, have been using had been previously skunked, and I'm using the skunked version. (Nooooo!) But if I don't use the words that are skunked, then there'll be no words left to use! Maybe I go overboard on this, but if I've written a word that I know has been skunked, I'll use the "right" way, and then I'll follow it up with a sentence that clarifies my meaning, I hope in natural conversation without being pedantic, making word vomit, or info dumping.

You've forgotten the most famous split infinitive: Star Trek's "To boldly go where no man/one has gone before." I've always split infinitives and always will. And I do believe it was Churchill who said also, "A preposition is a horrible thing to end a sentence with." When I found that quote , I happily embraced it! However, I know I'll have to ditch some other things I've been clinging to: that "fewer" is better than "less." I'll just use it myself because I prefer it, and just not call out anyone on it. Just in my head. I think I can more easily allow "none" to be "not any" as well as "not one." I shall not bother anyone else with it. What do you think about comparatives and superlatives? I've found more and more often (oftener?) that people will use "more" when the comparative is the suffix "-er." "more happy, more sad, more fluffy" instead of "happier, sadder, and fluffier." Will I have to let go of those, too?
