This reminds me of—not the reasons of the Civil War—but of the feelings people had about the war and how brother fought brother on opposite sides of the Mason-Dixon line. And how families hated each other for their convictions. Except it's not slaves they fight over now but fundamental life principles, telling each other how to live. (or maybe we don't know the extent of the disagreements in the Civil War. Maybe only slavery could be legislated to quell certain parts of the discontent and to continue as a nation.) People still have heated disagreements, perhaps handed down from one generation to the next. And we must work out these hateful feelings. Tho I can see comparing low-paid migrant workers and children in human trafficking amount to slavery (which it is). We need to work these clashes out. We need to choose mercy and dignity for all people, not for only the wealthy. When we can bring dignity and respect to all people, we have come a lot closer to our perfect union.
