  1. I have a sewing awl I've used in leather crafting to make a more streamlined seam than braided leather lace. When it's done right, it makes a very satisfying lockstitch. The needle goes down, then you pick the proper side of the loop to thread your "bobbin" sinew, and then pull the awl back out the same way it came through. I thought that should be around the same time or before the sewing machine, but no. It was 1909. Seems counterintuitive to me.
