I wonder if what people call "perfect pitch" is either finding their tune or memorizing notes. I memorized a B flat, but I always compare it to the opening 2 notes of a song (I think by Vaughn Williams). I was able easily to sing and harmonize as a young child. But I know it's not perfect pitch, and that's alright. I know how to listen to my fellow singer or players and adjust to blend in. This, I think, is more useful than perfect pitch, because I understand that for those with perfect pitch, it bothers them when the ensemble collectively plays out of key. There is a music adage: if you have an orchestra that is off key and one member who is on key, the one who is on key is wrong. And that's because playing on the same note in an ensemble is more important than strictly being on key.
