  1. Yes, this is Oversimplified. But along with the Cold War, people (like me) include the American and Soviet space programs as demonstrations of their power. And I read somewhere that the reason Apollo rockets were white was so the Soviet Union could easily see them. (Maybe I read that in Packing for Mars by Mary Roach? Or Yaeger —his connection to Apollo, maybe? Both good books anyway.) I think there's an Oversimplified on this?

  4. They didn't have much to work with after that. The Space shuttle they made is rotting. Their space project got sidelined indefinitely by politics. I think they got a boost from other space programs. I know that too work on the ISS astronauts must be able to wear a cosmonaut space suit for EVAs. They also have powerful rocket designs, but they pretty well have to piggyback on other space programs to survive.

  9. I would beg to differ, but I don't have anything to argue with except the discoveries after the fact that the Russians didn't have much to continue the Space Race. They had a shuttle craft like the American space shuttle, except it didn't work and got caught up in political red tape, was not funded, and it sits languishing in its hangar, rusting and disintegrating if not being cabbaged for other projects.
