Exactly! I've grown up in a world where you can't even get your hand in one, much less hold phone, keys, hand sanitizer, wallet, and other important pocket things like men are supposed to fit in their pockets. I think the author of the book Katy No-Pocket understood.

@yvonneburns2786 I had carried a small purse 7" long, 5" high, and 4" wide with stiff sides and a double zipper pull on top. When I went to the movies with a friend, I pulled out, one by one, each of the foods I packed for a lunch. A hamburger. A soda. Two baggies of different chips. A munchable vegetable. And a small dessert (brownie or cookie). That is, a nice brown bag lunch hidden in my purse. My friend remarked afterwards that she expected me to pull out a lamp from my purse like Mary Poppins did! This is the utility of even a small purse, or a large pocket.

So essentially you could have a 9x12 envelope and trim it to an 8x12 pocket shape for a pattern. Of course, for me, I would require 2 pockets because I expect one on either side. You used very small backstitching. I wonder if a blind stitch could work, too.

One of the books I had when I was young was Katy No Pocket Katy was a kangaroo who had no pocket (pouch) like the other lady kangaroos. I think she had a Joey and needed to carry him. In talking with other Animals, she found they carried their young other ways. So she was frustrated. But she met a man with a hardware store, and he listened to her story. Then he Promptly took off his apron and put it on her. Not only did she get one pocket but about a dozen pockets! She was very happy! I loved that book!

I collect rice bags for future projects, and I noticed my 5 lb bags are a little bigger than my hand span. They seem to have been made to easily convert to pockets. I'm not fond of the design, but there is always crosstitch, embroidery, and even crochet, knitting, and tatting.
