Great tips! Hold eye contact Give benefit of the doubt and answer the face value question and ignore insinuations. Call it out: what's the goal? Walk out politely. I will say this about bosses. Their position behooves them to be nice to people and look for intercooperation between employees. A boss I had—a manager at my grocery—once called me out when I left my register when I had a line of customers backed up. A customer had complained to him that I had done so. First, I told him the truth straight away without getting defensive: I knew exactly what item the customer wanted, I knew exactly where it was on the shelf, and the shelf was down the aisle that was directly in front of me. Instead of calling for a stock guy to get it for me, I saved a lot of time by going to get it myself. I told him all this and did not make any personal reference. He considered a bit. I'm not sure if he grunted or said "okay," but he accepted it and we went back to our work. The best thing one can do with a boss is Tell the exact truth. Forget: "I was only trying..." and other forms of defensiveness. Explain my rationale. Accept the boss's judgement. Ask for a better way to proceed in such cases. Problem-solve if the situation comes up often. Accept the boss's last word. Only use walk away if you are continuing out the front door with intent to resign. Exhaust all the other steps first. The truth and creativity and respect for your boss are paramount.
