Unfortunately, Disney's treatment of these cartoons is teetering over the edge of whitewashing. To act as if these didn't exist is like a child caught stealing a cookie and the child hiding the cookie behind their back.
It's done. It's released. It's been watched by many. Hiding it is pretending it never happened.
Yes, they are bad stereotypes. Yes they are products of their time. Precisely because they are products of their time they should not be banned. How do we learn from our past if our mistakes are not included?
On the other side of the coin is the culture of the time that was the best of that time. The Orangutan is singing the jazz at the time by the greats such as Satchmo. Black jazz is portrayed in many situations. It was invented by black people. To have it cut, to have it banned, is to deny black people their heritage and their dignity. And the black people who performed the music are steamrollered.
Yes, there were mistakes made. But don't assume that was all there was, there.
Uncle Remus put life I into what was, for a goodly part, a miserable existence. Whatever culture that was in, it was clear they didn't have much. That's what makes Song of the South so important: showing the Uncle Remuses at the time bolstering their people in hard times, teaching the children, and making fun of their owners and bosses. This whole movie was about the culture of slavery. You can't whitewash that out of existence.
