Science is why I wanted to take German in college, and in college I was introduced to the German scientific publication, Beilstein.
My Gram used to sing to us "Du, Du Liegst Mir im Haertzen," so I did know German wasn't a bombastic language. In college, I was delighted to hear the speech of my teachers, one who looked like a young Santa Claus, the other like Artie Johnson.
Artie Johnson played on a variety show called Laugh In, and he played a German soldier peering through a bunch of tall grass saying slyly, "Very interesting!" after a slightly risqué sketch. Quizzical and low key.
That, and I wanted to speak the language of half of my ancestors.
A lady friend of mine from Germany is a very jovial and light-hearted lady, and she speaks German to me and I to her. It's great fun!
Her sister with her boyfriend visited her, and we were putting up posters in different places. Armin the boyfriend and I finished first, so we struck up a conversation with each other. I in German, he in English. My friend said that Armin still talks about how well I speak German! That is so flattering from a native speaker it makes me giddy!
