This is one reason writers get a bit skittish about researching stuff for their books.

Yes. It happened around Halloween in 1980 and prompted parents to give out non - candy little prizes like cool pencils and other nifties. It was my worst Halloween ever. But at least Mom and Dad had the best kind of candy reserved for us after we'd collected our loot. They always did. The following year Mom and Dad relented, and Halloween was for the kiddos again. In about 1974 was when hospitals offered to X-ray children's candy bags. Mom worked at an emergency room that was doing it and we asked Dad to take us. (No, he said. Oh well.) I think the hospitals were also doing it for PR, too. What better way to help children understand how helpful hospitals and the people who work there by providing a service that a kindly staff can use to give them peace of mind. And the hospitals thus imparted good will to children to make them confident and less scared to go to a hospital in time of need. I thought it was brilliant when I looked back on it. That's probably why Dad didn't allow us to go. He knew the limitations, and he knew it might take up resources away from someone who really needed an emergency X-ray. (Savvy Dad. Glad to have had him in my life!) (Edit: 1982? I guess so.)
