They really should get that zip - code thing right in that movie. HE might not know what the Zip code thing is for, but I DO! It's for the mail - sorting machines.
If the zip is not readable by the OCR machine, a picture of that piece of mail is taken and sent to a computer bank in another department of - site, where people sit at a screen and read these zip codes and enter them on a keyboard, and these are sent back to match with the resorted mail.
So, yes they do mean something: the continued fast - tracking of mail. I have worked on the OCR's and on the zip-reading computers, as a MUM clerk (missent, unsorted, mis-zipped mail), and some hand - cased mail. If there are hand - cased (hand sorted and canceled) mail, its volume won't reach anywhere near the capacity of one mail tray in a day if at all. Just a smattering that wouldn't even stand up in a tray. Of all the mail processed at the main post office in Louisville, KY where I live, it's remarkable we would even have a half - hour's worth of hand-casing in a day! Everything from letters and bills and junk mail, catalogues and magazines are handled with amazing machines!
I adore the Post Office!
