The phone rings also sound like little bits of the sound were cut out of each strike of the clapper on each bell. I had a Trimline, and the rings were much clearer, the tone much longer lasting between strikes. And it would be cool to have some better rings of these bells available for Foley art.

Why did you hit the zero first on the touchtone? Zero would only bring up the operator if you hit it first.

While other countries dial 1 to call into the US? That would explain advertised 10-digit numbers adding a 1 prefix to the phone number. In fact, before cell phones, in order to access an area code out of your LAN (LATA?), you had dial 1 + area code +7 digit number. I could call the next county over with a 7-digit number, but outside that county and a little bleed - over to similar surrounding residences (including the next state), I had to use the 10—digit number. In the next area code, 1+area code had to be used. That was a long - distance call.

Before cell phones, you could pay as much as 25¢ a minute for a long - distance call, but if you made one after 7:00 pm, the cost dropped to 10¢ a minute. Businesses in those days operated 9-5. Toll free numbers were a big deal because they didn't charge you for long distance. (Not sure if that holds for metered cell service.) It was lasso possible to make a collect call where you "reverse the charges." The operator would call the number and ask if the recipient would accept or not. Station - to - station or person - to - person collect calls were different, too. Station-to - station, anybody answering could accept. But if person - to - person, the specific person called had to come to the phone and accept the charges or the call wouldn't go through.
