@muchacho56 : ''(Hendrix's) songwriting skills were fair.'' I hope you're not being serious. 'Little Wing', 'Castles Made of Sand', 'Voodoo Child', 'Foxy Lady', 'Machine Gun', 'Purple Haze', 'Fire', 'The Wind Cries Mary', 'Crosstown Traffic'...the list goes on. How you can label iconic tracks such as those that still sound fresh fifty years after Hendrix's death as ''fair'' in terms of playing and compositional aptitude displayed is moronic beyond belief. And stop with the ''sloppy'' nonsense too. It's embarrassing.

'Wouldn't ever deal with fender. Boring bland and overrated' What a ridiculous statement.

: How can someone who revolutionised electric guitar and who was, to use your term, an innovator, possibly be ''overrated''? To then go on to claim that technical ability alone is the mark of a good musician is also absurd. And no, Hendrix was not a ''...pretty standard blues player''. He is (rightly) lauded because he was the opposite. Ever listened to 'Machine Gun' live at the Fillmore East? Is that your definition of an average, run-of-the-mill blues player?

Most of it sounded very pop-like to me too.
13
It's vital for creating in any art form.

Can't say enough good things about Ian Thornley. His slide playing floors me.

You should learn the difference between facts and opinions. I'm not butthurt at all; just baffled that your thought is so pathetically limited that you feel the need to describe one of the most influential guitar companies using terms that are totally nonsensical. How can every Strat, Tele, Jazzmaster, Jaguar, etc. that Fender make, from the Squier range to the Masterbuilt instruments, possibly be 'overrated' or 'bland'? Explain that in detail.
5
I'm off to listen to Those Once Loyal to cleanse my ears.
5
‘Down in the Swamp’ is unbelievably good.
5
@doublestrokeroll : Béla Fleck playing with Tony Rice, Sam Bush, Mark O'Connor, and Jerry Douglas is hands down the best bluegrass I've ever heard.
5
Gallagher was incredible. A complete natural.

: I read what you wrote very carefully; I even quoted you. There wasn't much to figure out except some horribly misinformed opinions. You on the other hand have clearly not read my comments otherwise you wouldn't still be repeating simple-minded rubbish like, 'He captured the music of the time very well...'': a backhanded compliment if ever there was one. Hendrix did a bit more than that. His music is still iconic and and transcends 60s hippie culture. It hasn't dated, that's the point. You didn't even attempt to answer the question at the end of my last response either. Still waiting for that. For someone who is now keen to downplay the role of 'technical ability' on the guitar, you sure harp on about it a lot (''...technique wise he's somewhere in the bang average category'', ''I've seen plenty of average joes...that are just as technically gifted as he was.''). Your initial comment certainly hinted that it's a very important factor to you; songwriting and creativity coming second. Feel free to keep making a prat of yourself on a public forum though, it is amusing.
5
: I'm not annoyed in the slightest; just amused by your constant stupidity. You've not made any points that need to be refuted as you've not put forward any cogent arguments. All you've done is throw out meaningless accusations like ''overrated'' and ''average'' in some sad attempt to be contrarian. Oh, and well done for mentioning technical ability...again.
5
I was shocked that some of the songs sounded very similar to the horrible chart stuff. Unbelievable that they are classed as rock.
4
@phutureproof : There is when the opinion expressed is moronic.
4
@BeatlesCentricUniverse : Something tells me that Paul isn't the sharpest tool in the shed. ;)
4
@totc6196 : ''Machine gun from the Fillmore transcends guitar and in my opinion no one has gotten even close.'' I agree entirely. I've not heard anyone get close to that either and I don't think anyone ever will.
4
How much better did that sound compared to the autotuned crap!
3
Yep, better off listening to no music at all than this.
3
Is the rest of the album better? The track played here sounded boring AF.
3
14:00: Great to hear Robben talk about blues and its links to spirituality. Blues really is profoundly spiritual music and without it jazz is missing something fundamental. John McLaughlin has stated the very same thing on a number of occasions.
3
@muchacho56 : Read my comment properly; I didn't mention 'Hey Joe'. Nice attempt, but once again you've just made yourself look like an arse.
3
Yeah, did they even write any good songs? Malmsteen, Vai, and Michael Angelo Batio are much more tasteful with absolutely zero ego.
2
Very depressing. That was one of the worst tracks in the top 10. What kind of person is playing that song for enjoyment?
2
I condemned Gibson? Please do quote my comment.
2
Relicing is hugely popular though and has been copied by countless guitar manufacturers. Comparing that to needless 'innovation' like Gibson's robotic tuners is absurd.
2
9:39: ''I warmed up at 6 o'clock this morning''. Ha!
2
Not a bad rig.
2
@kyleelsbernd7566 : That's not ironic at all. Religion does not have a monopoly on spirituality.
2
He’s definitely one of the best around.
2
@leonmohan1708 : Neck feels better to play, companies who do good relic jobs (say Fender CS) tend to use better quality woods for their builds so relics tend to sound better, looks good...there are many reasons. Relics aren't 'dragged through a field' as I've seen some clueless people mention; it takes time to do it properly. More time invested during the making process = more expensive guitar.
2
@leonmohan1708 : You could of course do that, but it takes years for nitro to wear down and expose the wood underneath so most people are quite happy to cut out the waiting time. I know some people who have bought Custom Shop guitars that for one reason or another have had nitro applied that hasn't cured properly. Nothing worse than sticky lacquer on a neck. Just get rid of it from the area where your hand is in contact when playing. I don't feel like I've not properly bonded properly with my Strat because it has a medium relic job. The thing feels better to play than any non-relic'd guitar I've ever tried.
2
@leonmohan1708 : They do feel so much better. Try some out and you'll immediately notice the difference. Most people that knock relics have never even picked one up. The vintage guitars from the 50s and 60s that people love and that naturally accumulated wear over time took thirty years (or more) of playing look and feel the way they do. I, and many others, simply don't want to wait that long.
2
I would've included 'Sin City', 'Beating Around the Bush', and 'Whole Lotta Rosie' instead of a few of these choices.
2
Who are you interviewing next? Jeff Beck?
2
@stevemuzak8526: Highly doubt it.
2
Jimmy?
2
Richard Thompson is an amazing songwriter...an incredible musician all round.
2
Good. Doesn't mean that there is anything inherently wrong with buying a guitar with less finish on it off the shelf though; they often feel nicer to the touch (particularly the back of the neck). A lot of people argue that they sound more 'open' too.
1
I would like to see Dave talk about his guitar collection on his own channel. Getting an insight into what he likes about different makes of Strats, Tele, and LPs would be great.
1
Please interview Guthrie Trapp.
1
Eurghh...Community Guidelines are the worst. Great idea in theory, but do Facebook, Instagram, YT, etc actually do much to enforce them? Do they fuck. The number of homophobic, racist, sexist, and downright ignorant comments that get a free pass on these platforms is absurd beyond belief. May as well have no Community Guidelines at all.
1
@ModernGolfer : And the many professional musicians who choose use relic'd guitars? Are they just wankers too?
1
Or maybe they just don't like the music.
1
Tuned down half a step...

For anyone interested in exploring classical music further I would strongly recommend David Munrow and the Early Music Consort of London, The Clemencic Consort, Martin Best Medieval Ensemble, and the New London Consort.
1
You're absolutely right. I find it almost impossible to think of this chart crap as music; I feel nothing listening to it. It's just audible wallpaper.
