  1. They probably didn't have enough ammunition to hold the first line. I'd image the second line can't hold long before going dry. Third line is pretty much in the city and can be a bit of a slog. Unfortunately the russians are using ukranians as human shields.

Anyway there's been plenty of evidence showing russians use civilian objects as sheilds 🛡Like the 2 neucular power plants. U.N OHCHR has many reports verifying russkiys use this tactic. As for ammunition there are only small pedestrian bridges and a ferry ⛴. Hard to move supplies along these lines. Especially with the famously inept command and control of the russians.
