When he declared an independent Ukraine he was placed in a concentration camp. Bandera followers went along with Nazis under threat of also going to a camp. Bandera was eventually released near the end of the war in an attempt by Germans to organize a ukranian screene. However Bandera fled this time around. Bandera was terrible, but he's far from the most important ukranian figure in ww2.

Unlike in Russia where you can get 15 years just for calling it a war. At least the western nations are more grounded in reality and not nazi ideology. There's not very much freedom to speak your mind in Russia.
