I’m up here in northern Canada on the west coast and winter is -40c for weeks on end. We all just pile into one room with blankets, cozy sleep wear and hot coco into a small-ish room. You’d be surprised how much heat a few bodies throw off. We have to throw open two windows open three times a day to keep the temp and humidity (and body odour) down.

@ Yes we do. But being in a room with multiple people and no ventilation tends to create ‘stuffy’ air. It doesn’t stink per se, but it’s not exactly a pleasant smell and indicates higher humidity, which is not something you want.

@ I’m just south of Yukon Territory, and I work as maintenance in a warehouse. No one around here in their right mind would wear polyester if they do hard labour during any time of the year. We get ‘cold snaps’ with Arctic winds and our high altitude and the temp will drop from an average of -25c to -40c in the matter of a day. Right now, it’s unusual warm, but come January and definitely in February we have to bundle up and be very thoughtful if we go out.

@kibasays Im honestly giving up on these people. They’ll swear up and down that they don’t smell cause they shower and not realize that they do indeed, have a smell to them. Really shows their lack of self awareness. There’s a difference between having a smell and being stinky.

@ while I won’t say specifically for privacy reasons, it’s in the north at much higher altitude than say Vancouver, which does have fairly mild winters.

@thouchild it’s kind of baffling as they don’t even ask first? They just assume, as if living here my entire life and basic things like personal hygiene is an unheard of concept. Like taking a bath/shower before bed is just the norm around here (do it in the morning and the dry freezing air will rip your skin apart the moment you step out). Well, if it’s one comfort we can have is knowing they wouldn’t last a week in either of our shoes 🤣.

@OddWeird461 those people get thrown into a snow bank (at least around here). Whether you like it or not, everyone has an odour, and that doesn’t go away just because you washed, but there is a big difference between one’s natural smell and being stinky cause you thought scrubbing between asscheeks is ‘gay’.

@TessJordan-lp5sc the fuck? No? Tell me you don’t live in cold environments without saying you don’t. Culturally we like being around each other, and winter is the perfect time for that (playing games, chatting, eating good food). Also, electricity heating is expensive, why spend more money than needed? One major thing about living in such cold weather is that humidity kills, or at the least is severely damaging (both to people and building) so we avoid it where and when we can. It’s not that we never take showers, we’re just not excessive with them like a lot of other places. We open windows to get fresh air, and lower the humidity and touch some grass (snow) here and there. Good lord, if anyone is being dramatic, it’s gotta be you. I never stated that we were living rough, but you took your twist on it.
