  1. In 1960 McGuire AFB was independent of Fort Dix and Naval Air Station Lakehurst (site of the 1937 Hindenburg disaster). The joint base concept did not emerge until 2005 (I was briefly involved in the program). The three bases remained independent until 2009 when they became the first and only (as far as I know) tri-service joint base.
