It didn't help that conservative US Congressman Larry McDonald (D-GA), who was also president of the strongly anticommunist John Birch Society, was killed on that flight. Yes, there used to be such a thing as conservative Democrats.

@FukAzz RS I rather doubt that. The Korean airliner was shot down because Soviet air defense at the time was incredibly paranoid (as was top Soviet leader Andropov) and rather incompetent. Of course, the same might be said of the crew of the USS Vincennes when, in 1988, it mistakenly downed an Iranian airliner, thinking it was an attacking fighter. Then there is the case of the Malaysian airliner that was destroyed by a Russian made missile fired from the pro-Russian separatist side of Ukraine in 2014. And now we have the latest tragedy, the downing of a Ukrainian airliner by jittery missile men in Iran just a few days ago. Ascribing other motives may provide some sense of rationalization, but the cold hard truth is that nobody has cornered the market on the tragic, criminal mishandling of air defense.

@danielsummey4144 Compare the views of "Rockefeller Republicans" to those of the Democratic Party today. You won't find much overlap. The same applies to liberal Democrats of that era. One could argue it was the natural progression of ideology, but if you could communicate with FDR, Truman, Kennedy, and LBJ, I suspect they would disagree.

I have a piece of the wall, along with some East German shoulder tabs and caps that my brother got for me while on a mission to Berlin right after the wall came down. I've always kept the concrete in a plastic bag because he warned me it contains high levels of asbestos. I hope you washed your hands well after handling it in the video.
