  1. Speaking of apocryphal, there is another interpretation of the Maire Antoinette quote which claims the "cake" she was referring to was the buildup of burnt food that cakes the inside of an oven. Either version of the story is enough to excite the starving masses to violence, but I suspect a more likely explanation was the need of propagandists to rouse the public by creating false claims of supreme mockery and indifference, or perhaps the story arose after her death as a way of justifying the cruel act of what was essentially political murder.
