  1. My Dad was a B-29 engine mechanic in Alaska during the Korean War. It was a maintenance nightmare even then (he made a point of never flying on them despite being qualified to serve as a volunteer crew member). The vastly improved B-50 was a much superior aircraft, but was soon superseded by the B-47 and B-52 jet bombers. During my Air Force ROTC history classes we were told the China based B-29 strategy proved to be a failure. If the planes weren't catching fire in flight, they were doing limited damage to Japanese targets, largely due to parts, fuel, and bombs having to be flown into China over The Hump. Your emphasis on the political importance of this China strategy puts the entire story in a proper perspective.
