The History Guy: History Deserves to Be Remembered

I never considered myself lucky when I discovered a baloney sandwich in my lunchbox. I do recall having to remove the red plastic ring before making cold sandwiches or frying it in a pan. It would always balloon up when fried. I'd cut slits in it and try to deflate it, but in the end I had a warped piece of deli meat. My wife spent her early youth in Detroit and enjoyed baloney purchased at the local deli. She still insists it was much better than the dreaded Oscar Mayer variety. It's all a load of baloney to me. I can afford to buy better lunch meat now. I don't know about a year from now.

@sparky6086 I was fed a lot of baloney when I was at Georgia Tech. The good news is, unlike today, none of it came from my professors.

@popefacto5945 She doesn't recall the brand, but her Mom bought them at their local Jewish deli. Right now I'm enjoying COSTCO all beef hotdogs. They are such a far cry from the dyed red dogs of my youth that leeched their colors when boiled. I have a hotdog rotisserie that does a great job if one has the patience to wait 30-40 minutes for them to reach the ideal state. It even has a bun steamer (sort of).

@kevinbarry71 We used to buy Boar's Head meat at the base commissary, which was quite good, but never the bologna. Growing up on Oscar Mayer left me too jaded to try it. Somebody got me to try olive stuffed bologna once, not knowing I hate green olives (the result of another childhood trauma).

@kevinbarry71 Montana is not well noted for its cuisine. In my area we have Jimmy John's and Subway.

@LG123ABC When I was five I ate an entire jar of green olives and became nauseated. The sight of anything with green olives in it now makes me ill. I had a similar experience with Taco Doritos at age 14. I consumed a large bag of them under a hot summer sun and haven't been able to look at them since. Behold the power of food memories. For the record, I can still eat black olives and Nacho Doritos, but I do so in moderation.

@kevinbarry71 I believe you, though liverwurst is not among of my favorites. I enjoy different hams, pastrami, roast beef, and most anything that's smoked. It's hard to find a place anymore that knows how to make a proper submarine or Cuban sandwich. When you do, count yourself fortunate. Preparing the right mix of bread, meats, cheeses, condiments, etc. create a taste that chain restaurants cannot duplicate.

@captainamericaamerica8090 Never heard of them, so I looked up the name and found we have three here in MT, though none closer than a 100 miles. 😞
