  1. The aircraft shown at 2:26 is a French Salmson 2A2 reconnaissance biplane. Salmsom designed and built one the earliest air-cooled radial engines, which would be among the most common types used from the 1920s through WWII and beyond. To illustrate how recent this history really is, I grew up having a neighbor who flew Salmsons in WWI. He also was a member of the OX-5 club and wore his OX-5 pin all the time. The OX-5 was an early V-8 American liquid-cooled aircraft engine manufactured by Curtiss. Liquid-cooled engines were about as popular as the radials during the golden age of propeller aviation.
