Thanks for setting the record straight. My sister drove a Gremlin in high school. It was the only car parked on a straight section of city street when a drunk, for reasons we never understood, swerved over and rear-ended it. The car was a total write-off, but it did not explode and, luckily, it was the one car my Dad had purchased collision insurance for. Years later I was rear-ended in my Datsun 240Z while waiting to make a turn. It was turned into an accordian, but it did not explode and I only received minor injuries. Around the same time period a good friend of mine was zipping along the German Autobahn when another car struck his. The Pacer flew off the highway and rolled over several times, but neither he nor his wife were injured. He was impressed by the strength of the car body, which held together and was not crushed. It also did not explode.

@drizler They were buckled in their Pacer and yes, they do have a lot glass.

Have you done an episode on the Dateline NBC story where the network reporters used rigged GM pickup trucks to falsely show they were unsafe because their gasoline tanks were installed on the sides of the trucks, outside the frame?
