I have seen a picture of an experimental Colt 1911 pistol made entirely of stainless steel in WWII, but it would not be until 1965 that Smith & Wesson began producing the first commercially marketed stainless steel handgun, their iconic Model 60 2" Chief Special. Today new forms of stainless steel and modern plastics are the firearm industry standard.
