With an estimated 300 billion stars in our galaxy and only 20 million of them being binary dead stars, that gives you a ratio of 15,000 to 1. That's about as hard as finding a gas station in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, then trying to paddle your space dingy there for fuel before blasting off to Pluto. I cannot see how any advanced race could benefit from this technique unless they are only traveling locally. It's a long time between pit stops in space at the sub-light speeds involved.

So if I'm lucky, all I have to do is travel about 400 trillion kilometers to the nearest station so I can hitch a ride on a star train traveling at .3 light speed to another star system. If I'm not lucky, I must travel 3000 light years to V616 ( the nearest black hole we know of) so I can catch a star train to other star systems. Either way, how many decades or centuries will I be on that train? I equate it to riding a snail to town so I can catch a turtle to the moon. In Vegas they'd say you're making your point the hard way.
