  1. It's possible some GI's resorted to vigilante justice against their peers, but there was no such policy enacted by any US military unit. If a commander had attempted it, he would have found himself quickly relieved of command and subjected to judicial punishment. There were instances of GIs murdering POWs, and these were sometimes covered up by their superiors, but it was not an official policy. Patton once caught a good deal of flak from Ike over such an incident which he had tried to ignore and sweep under the rug. The guilty soldier was killed in combat a few weeks later so the matter was dropped, but Ike's warning stood.
