It's called a reality check.

I'm not sure what Peter means by powerhouse. Sweden has a population under eleven million.

I guess nobody else in the world is willing and able to replace German precision manufacturing. 😒

@VancouverInvestor It's common enough in the first world, and the opportunities are there for up and coming nations.

In the case of China I would call it "enema-sourcing" because they aren't our friends and they sell mostly crap products.

Yep.

Don't print for me, Argentina.

Too bad we can't house all the homeless in China.

@verigumetin4291 Tell that to the Texans who were without energy during the cold snap of 2021.
1
@verigumetin4291 You don't wreck your car everyday, either, but is that a valid argument for not wearing a safety belt? You want reliable energy every single day, 24 hours a day. The system that comes closest to achieving this goal and making it affordable is the system that wins.

@verigumetin4291 I am not going offtrack. I am stating a fact that bears consideration. Texans needlessly suffered from a cold winter when the green portion of their energy grid could not handle the demand. Do you really think it can't happen again somewhere else or that it's no big deal? Unlike fossil fuels, solar only produces energy when there is sufficient wind or sunshine and land available to collect it. Solar energy cannot be collected in the dark and wind energy cannot be collected on still days, so it must be stored in batteries which are very inefficient and wasteful. You must either use it or lose it. I've only scratched the surface of problems with it. Its utility is very limited and very expensive for what you get in return. For an electrical grid, nuclear power offers the best and most economical solution, followed by hydroelectric (where feasible), coal, oil, and gas. When it comes to ground and sea transportation there is nothing to date that can compete with the internal combustion engine.

I envision a future where my personal quantum computer is constantly popping in and out of space-time.

This situation is reminiscent of Cuba when Castro seized power. The first wave of emigrants was composed of the skilled labor set. Then much later came the unskilled and the criminal class. When Chavez took power he ran off the opposition groups which were composed mainly of skilled workers and the educated class, among them my future sister-in-law. Thankfully she was able to leave by plane instead of by foot. Now we see the unskilled laborers leaving in droves. I guess they discovered to their misfortune that poor people also starve once the powers-that-be run out of other people's wealth to redistribute.

We can look forward to a future where we live twice as long due to synthetic foods, synthetic drugs, and synthetic people.

SpaceX is building a separate satellite system for the Department of Defense called Starshield. It is fully encrypted and has jam-safe communication (including laser comm), which Starlink does not.

Just introduce rent control. Problem solved! 😲

The Soviets were able to prevent most people trapped in Eastern Europe from escaping to the West and Israel has successfully stopped nearly all terrorists attempts to enter through their protective wall. Walls do work if you complete them, maintain them, and properly man them.

The cure is worse than the disease.

Good for you, Peter.

Maybe AI will encourage the average Joe and Josie to improve their grammar and vocabulary. Meanwhile, does anyone know where I can find a good plumber?
1
I disagree. The English have always been master manipulators, whether inside or outside of a system. That aspect of their nature is not likely to change.
1
@plouf53 Your statement applies equally to any country.
1
@plouf53 I will if you will be more tactful. That's supposed to be English trait.

Savannah smiles.

No loss.

Location, location, location.

What happened to Venezuela's plan to invade and seize northern Guyana? Did their troops get lost?
1
Fine, Peter, let's stop buying clothes made in Bangladesh so nobody but ship breakers have jobs. Happy now?
