It's basically due to fearmongering and power-hungry politicians taking advantage of ignorance and stupidity. Don't worry, it'll change soon-ish.

Kurt Fox Why do people like you always assume everyone in America who doesn't consume psychedelics is just chugging away at coffee, huffing on cigarettes, and drunk driving? It's obnoxious.

@brendanariki Why are you fussing at Reason? They interviewed plenty of people and one guy mentioned that. Should they cut his ideas out because you don't like them?

Hob Nob that's a bit of a stretch. You'd be pressed to find any Latin scholar who would describe Government as meaning "mind control."
2
@Theaverageazn247 only about 8% of inmates. Inconsequential in the grand scheme of the drug war.
2
@TIm_Bugge No.
2
Hob Nob Nah, chief. Your Latin is off. "Ment" as a suffix modifies the "Govern" not to describe what's being governed. It's meant to mean the mindset of governing. The mindset or thought process of power and control. You have it backwards. Think what you want about the state, but that Latin was incorrect.
2
Hob Nob K. The "ment" doesn't come from mind. In romantic languages, "ment" meaning mind is usually used with an "ly" suffix or a "er." It's "mentum," which means "tool" or "technique." Government means a tool for power. Don't believe everything you see online.
2
Hob Nob Yeah. It's inaccurate.
2
Hob Nob This isn't "doubtful." It's the etymology of the word. And if that's your perception of government, fine. That's subjective. The etymology is not.
2
Hob Nob What are you asking here? This isn't about definitions, it's about etymology. They're usually related, but not always.

It was just one guy. They interviewed diverse people with diverse viewpoints. One guy brought it up, others didn't.
