What Eddie doesn't get (or he might get it and just didn't say anything about it this time) is that these gun-grabbing politicians don't know anything about guns, don't WANT to know anything about guns, and actually need NOT to know about guns in order to appeal to their base. It's a sort of performative ignorance, where, if you start talking about "silencers, machine guns, assault rifles, magazine lengths" you pass the sniff test to a gun grabber. You're not one of those "gun nuts" that knows noise suppressors don't make the gun go "pew" all quietly, or who knows that assault rifles and machine guns aren't freely available, etc. You're not one of the bad guys if you stay ignorant. So they either stay ignorant, or they pretend to, in order to keep getting them votes! There's also the added effect where knowledge makes people less likely to support these issues, so you'll have fewer people push for gun-grabbing after taking some time to learn about firearms. But as far as politicians go, they're performatively ignorant. I'd say it's a similar issue to drugs.
