@johnprentice1474 You do the math! Italy has an old population, and their median age of death from this is 81. America's death rate is crawling up compared to other countries. Lastly, look at that cruise ship. 700 cases, 7 deaths. 1%. That's the only place we've had 100% testing. AND those were mostly old people on that ship. Extrapolate their ages out to the ages of America and you get a 0.125%-1.25% CFR w/ the average sitting at .625%, which is what South Korea has seen. "They" aren't hiding the lethality here. Italy is fucked because they're old and their socialized Medicine isn't capable of adapting to incentives like a pandemic. You beat this thing one of two ways: authoritarianism, or free markets. China beat it with the former, Korea with the latter.

@stefangrozdanovic4908 Their healthcare is fucked because it's government-run. Bureaucracy isn't capable of handling things like this. Incentives in bureaucracy encourage uncreative thinking and mediocrity. South Korea doesn't have an entire Government-run system, and they're faring much better. I never said we shouldn't care about old people. Stop doing that finger-pointing thing internet people do by assuming the worst in someone without evidence and maybe we can have an actual discussion here.

Well duh! What'd you expect? They're government lackeys, and they always have been!

@calebh7902 no one is trying refute that death rate, because it's true. Look at that cruise ship where everyone was tested and everyone got it. 1% death rate, mostly old people. Extrapolated out to our population and that's about a .6% death rate, likely less. That's just a bit more than a bad flu. Not worth panic-shutting down everything. I get they want to lower the curve, but depressing the economy won't save anyone.

@Tracer73866 it's the ratchet effect. Two steps bigger government during a crisis, one step smaller when it's over. Never let a crisis go to waste.

We're destroying the economy for a virus with an actual death rate of about .6%. This probably won't save lives in the long run.
