The problem is this mindset is great when it's voluntary--you and yours helping anyone you can. That falls apart when you rise up to the macro scale of the federal government and start perverting incentives with redistribution and bloated bureaucracy. You stop helping people at that point. Voluntarism is the only way.

@shridharbiju7370 people rarely go bankrupt solely from medical debt. Most of the stats you see are the percentage of all bankruptcy cases that involve any amount of medical debt.

@justinunion7586 I don't trust the government to do any of those things.

@justinunion7586 You might convince SOMEONE of ANYTHING in your life if you stopped making assumptions about people and listened to what they said. This guy already said he's not a right-winger and doesn't support all these things you keep claiming he supports. You're not getting anywhere with him because you're not talking TO him, you're talking AT him, aka preaching.

@SSPspaz That's true. "Government doing anything" isn't socialism. Nationalization of industry is. A social safety net is not. A centrally planned economy is. One of those makes the economy slightly less efficient, but it's very easy to argue that it might make the country and world a better place, and most folks want varying degrees of it. The other has been disastrous anywhere it's been tried and is tantamount to advocating for an equal-opportunity genocide.

@justinunion7586 No it's not? He said he doesn't want the government morphing into a socialist state, you said he's okay with a bunch of things he's not okay with, and I said the same. Being forced to pay with something with the threat of violence doesn't make us supporters of said act, and that's entirely relevant. That's the whole point of this discussion.

Nin Shade What alternate universe are you looking at where these massive bureaucratic programs aren't existing? People died of plenty of things in "history." That's not proof we need these programs now.

Nin Shade How do you know?
