I think that originally "Speculation" was a form of divination, IOW fortune telling. It involved sitting in a dark room between two parallel mirrors, which gives the illusion of an infinite space with an endless row of candels and sitters going off into the far distance in both directions. This (sometimes) induced a dream- or trance-like state in which one could (you hope!) see into the future. Speculation from the Latin word for a mirror, Speculum. Probably, as a Romanian, you know all this anyway.
