About the Germans using poison gas first in WW1: The man who taught me chemistry, said that the German use of Chlorine was triggered by the British use of Ammonium Perchlorate as a high explosive. One of the breakdown products of Ammonium Perchlorate, when it explodes, is Chlorine. When the Germans smelt Chlorine, they thought that the British were using Chlorine as a poison gas against them and retaliated by using various poison gasses against the Western Allies. It was a bad mistake because the prevailing wind in France is from the West so they suffered from it more than the Western allies did. (And they suffered more than horribly enough!)
