I read a story about a remote village where everybody except one old couple had been lifted out of poverty and the local Communist party put their heads together and discussed what to do. Then, they went to this couple and asked : "Are you on the internet?" When they replied that they were, the poverty alleviation official said: "Well I have a proposal to help you get out of poverty. If you go up the mountain behind your house, a few hundred metres, you will find ginger growing wild there. Go up there and pick some and bring it back here and advertize it on the internet. We'll give you paper and string to get started and the postman will take it for you. We think it will sell well. Try it and let us know how you get on. This solved the problem. The couple are now resonably prosperous. It is this sort of imaginative approach to problems that seems to me, to be typical of the Chines Communist Party.

Things develop in China at anextraordinary speed: for example I think if I remeber correctly, all the eight huge buildings around Tien An Men Square were built in eight months. Eight months altogether, that is, not eight months each..

When I was at school I avidly followed the progress of the Chinese revolution. Even before the declaration of the PRC, there were reports about the crisis in the Communists' economy. As soon as the PRC was declared, more re[ports of the imminent coming collapse started appearing in the British Newspapers and on the BBC. It has never stopped since, right up to this morning these reports keep coming. So far, the Chinese have had difficulties, but nothing they have been unable to cope with and through it all they have grown and grown and become stronger and more technologically advanced.

A growth rate of 6% means that in ten years the economy will double in size. That means that if you have ten years when the economy grows by 6%, at the end of the ten years 3% growth is the same absolute amount of growth that 6% was ten years before.
