3:17 I am not convinced that "Russia was caught off guard". There were rumours about this operatin in both Western media and Russian, a couple of weeks before it happened. There is also the precedence of the Soviet army setting a similar trap for the Werhmacht in the 2nd World War. Stalin was rather addicted to attacking at all times, but on this occasion, his generals convinced him to set a trap for the /Germans in Kursk, by pretending to weaken the defences in this very area and they succeeded in luring them into making a push towards Kursk. The event went down in History as the "Battle of the Kursk Salient" and was a massive defeat for the German army. Before the Ukrainian invasion of Kursk the Russians removed the minefields along the border in this region, ostensibly to facilitate an offensive of their own, but they, obvoiusly did not prepare any such offensive. It looks to me like an invitation to the Ukrainian military, which is addicted to attacks, to "Please come and attack us here!"
