I am reminded of a story from the 70s when a small number of companies adopted the Chinese idea of sending ruling class people to work in the fields or on the factory floor, to gain insight into how their actions and decisions affected ordinary people. Avis was one such company. There was a story that one of the vice-presidents, who was working as a booking clerk, had really messed up someone's booking and was confronted by a very angry customer, who asked him: "What is your position in this company?" and rather sheepishly, he admitted to being a vice-president. "Yeah!! And I'll bet your old man is chairman of the board!" was the bitter reply.
