Scott, I agree with what you say, more or less completely, what I think you are neglecting is the positive feedback loop that is driving the arms race, which is the nest of congress-critters who own shares in the arms industry and receive not only dividends but also direct bribes, campaign contributions and other kickbacks and operate a revolving door that reaches out to the military. Until that vipers' nest is dealt with, any emergent leader to lead us out of the current Slough of Despond (TM John Bunyan), will be cut down to nothingness by the MSM or assassinated. Many thanks to all three of you for a really fascinating and illuminating couple of hours. You brought up a number of important points which I had previously missed.
