Particularly as those that wanted to prevent them from sorting themselves out, included the CIA, who funded all sorts of terrorist groups to disrupt their development and drive towards independence. It is no surprise that the Ex-colonial powers are angry and upset at these developments, because for centuries they have been looting Africa and reducing them to abject poverty and extracting enormous wealth for themselves in the process. Look, for example at the Oil Companies and Nigeria! They have not just looted, but have done so in an incredibly damaging way for the environment.

As to whether the relationship with the Chinese is better than the relationship with the US. Which would you rather have : the US's help with "fighting" Al Qaida or a railway, a hospital, an airport, a highway.... Would you rather have an IMF loan with attached Austerity and 72 gendered bathrooms or a Chinese loan to build some infrastructure? The choice is theirs, if they can get the CW off their backs.
