  1. One of my memories of my NS time in Germany is of being in a pub when a man came over to me and indicating a chair beside the table said: "Is this place free?" "Yes" I replied. ( I was in fact, on my own and unusually, in uniform.) He plonked his 'Stein down on the table and sat down. "I was in the Waffen SS." he announced, proudly. I don't remember what I replied but it was something non-committal. Probably, I asked where he had fought and it turned out that he had fought in southern Russia. "Rough, I imagine." I said." "ROUGH?! You can't imagine how rough it was! It was beyond anything I could have dreamt up! In the warm weather there were biting flies like you have never seen and dust, great clouds of dust and partizans and when it was cold there was mud like three metres deep! And when it froze it froze so hard that nothing would start.. Anything that was bogged down when it froze needed explosive to dig it out! And we had summer uniforms. God! It was awful and always there were partizans!"
