  1. Until NATO started really "Poking the Bear" hard, there was no danger to guard against. The German government policy was rational until very recently. Of course, if you are going to provoke an armed conflict with a neighbour, it is as well to find out how capable he is before you start! It seems that the Collective West, made the potentially fatal mistake of believing their own propaganda about Russia's feebleness, corruption, stupidity, laziness, cowardice, disorganization, dud equipment, "a gas-station masquerading as a country" and so on and so forth. They, obviously thought, that the barrage of sanctions, they imposed, would crash the Russian economy and the Ukrainians would crush the Russian army, (if the Russians even had the nerve to respond militarily to their challenge, (which was massacring 14,000 Russian-speaking Ukrainians between 2014 and 24/2/22 and threatening ethnic cleansing of the rest.) They thought, apparently, that the crashing economy and the military defeat would lead to a "color revolution" in Moscow that would remove Putin and install a pro-western government. They were wrong on all counts.
