"Took sweeping measures to cut their energy imports from Russia" they surely did! But, without making sure that they could replace them with imports from elsewhere! Turns out that that was not easy. In fact, the chief beneficiary of these embargos was the United States, which partly replaced the European imports from Russia with its own products, at up to five times the price! The Russians did not suffer much, as there is currently a shortage of oil and gas, so they were able to find other customers and as the prices are generally higher than they were, they got similar returns from their trade.

@ Stephan Buchin Yes, I expect the Europeans will manage at least in part, to correct their mistake but it has already cost them dearly and will cost them still more in future. You say the Russians are struggling to sell their oil and gas. Where is your evidence for that? As there seems to be a shortage of both I find it difficult to believe it is much of a struggle. The co-operation between OPEC and Russia is likely to keep the prices high at least for the foreseeable future. Given that China and India are not going to co-operate in the price-cap idea, I doubt that the Russians are going to suffer much if at all.

@StephanBuchin Yes, I expect the Europeans will be able to partly get over their mistake. However, it will cost them dearly, it already has. I doubt that the Russians are (evidence) "struggling to sell its oil and gas" or that it will in future. The Russian and Chinese friendship with the Gulf Oil monarchs looks like a death knell for the petrodollar. If the Russians an OPEC cooperate they can keep the oil price high for a long time and the lower volume sales will be offset by higher prices.
