  1. Another possibility occurs to me: namely that BOTH Israel and Hamas were setting a trap for the other. The Israelis may have thought, that by tipping Hamas off that there was going to be a weakening of the border, they would show the World "just how horrible Hamas really is", thus providing an excuse for killing massive numbers of Palestinians, while Hamas thought, that by behaving in this terroristic fashion, they would lure the Israelis into waging a ground war inside the Gaza Strip resulting in massive Israeli casualties. This, of course, is merest speculation on my part.
