  1. Both Cuba and China are socialist. Cuba has a socialist planned economy but is under an embargo (hence why they can't economically grow much, as they're a small island with limited resources and a small population, so obviously they won't have the same trajectory as China), while China has a socialist market economy. In Marxian terms, both socialism and communism are used interchangeably; socialism is considered the "low phase of communism."
