The Jizya, and jannisary system were some methods of assimilation. Understand that western Anatolia, and eastern Thrace didn’t become Turkish by magic. Many assimilated in the Balkans as well but migrated to Anatolia following the Balkan wars

It also would allow Turkey to station its army in Cyprus indefinitely. That is not reunification, it is occupation.

Tell me why, still to this day, Greeks who lost their homes and all their belonging are still not allowed to collect their things? Go watch part 1 of this series, he shows an example of this. Turkish Cypriots from the beginning were always able to go back and collect their things but not the other way around?

  13.  @KayraR  Turks in Greece are fine, look at Western Thrace. Turks there have continued to exist peacefully unlike the Greeks in Turkey. If Cyprus were to ever unite with Greece, Turkish Cypriots would be fine just like the Turks in Western Thrace are. Now if Cyprus were ever to become part of Turkey, im sure the Greeks there would be erased just as they were in Istanbul and the two islands.

  16.  @maazkalim  there are many many good reasons why it isn't recognized, just as the annexation of Crimea is not recognized. Everyone knows it exists, but to officially recognize it would legitimize what Turkey did as well as make it easier for other countries to do the same thing in the future. It also would cause a major diplomatic issue with all parties involved if it were to be recognized. By leaving it unrecognized leaves the door open for future negotiation. Also Cyprus has plenty of reasons to be hostile to Turkey, you know this. If Google maps didn't show Turkish citizens a map with the TRNC on it, Google maps would get banned in Turkey. Just as if in China, they didn't show Chinese citizens a map which includes Taiwan, Google maps would be banned. To have a separate version of the maps for these disputed territories just makes all parties happy, which is what a business should do..

Kurdish discrimination was around since the founding of Turkey.. there were several massacres of Kurds in the early 1900s. The oppression continues to this day.

Look up the Istanbul Pogrom as I am sure they don't teach you about it in schools. Istanbul had over 200,000 Greeks before this, and as a result of it, they all left. It's understandable for Greeks to hold some long term resentment towards Turks after this. Why didn't Greece intervene to protect the minorities? Should it have?

This obviously all happened before any violence was committed against Turkish Cypriots. These two incidents are not unrelated, rather a response to the Greek massacre in Istanbul. 'Pogrom' means massacre btw. The Istanbul pogrom was spearheaded by a Turkish organization "Cyprus is Turkish" (CTA). By what right did the Turks have to do this? Once again, Cyprus was over 80% Greek at the time so by what right was Cyprus Turkish? Based on all this, you don't think Turkey was just waiting for the right moment to invade Cyprus? There was this huge movement pushing to do exactly that growing in the country for over 20 years.

So the conclusion you can come to from that is the Turkish Cypriots on the island are simply Turkified Greeks, similar to what happened in Crete. Greeks settled there 3000 years ago so it's safe to say, they are the natives.

  26. Turkey won't allow that to happen. Turkey offers unfair deals to the government of Cyprus. All of the reunification plans gives the Turkish government most of the power there. Yet in Greece, Turks are a growing and thriving minority. The Turkish government is at fault here.

The fake news created a nationalist backlash there, which is why they were chanting what they did. My point was that Turkey and Turkish people wanted that island for decades, long before any violence in Cyprus. The violence merely gave them an excuse to do what they wanted, and the current occupation of the island is proof of this.

If anatolian Greek was still a thing, that DNA would likely match up with it. The vast majority of Turks in Cyprus were originally Greeks who eventually assimilated to Turkish culture. That was pre Cyprus split though since Turkey has been importing settlers from mainland Turkey into Northern Cyprus

It was after the Ottomans were overthrown that the new Turkish government really tried to solidify their control over their territories. They expelled pretty much all Greeks from Anatolia, you had that terrible situation with the Armenians, and now this in Cyprus. I don't think you can solely blame the British for this.

In Cyprus a Turkish mob hanged most of the Greek Cypriots in Larnaca. By 1822, 62 Greek Cypriot villages and hamlets had completely disappeared. They were ruled over by various powers but the citizens living there were always Greek. Also you said the Greeks are free to go back to their homes but that isn't true. Any Greeks still in Turkish occupied Northern Cyprus were expelled. This is no different to Israel occupying Palestine. It is terrible what was happening to the Turkish minority on the island but attempting to colonize it is no solution. Try to do some research on the subject because it seems you are lacking many important points.

You need to look at Greek history to understand.. The Greeks, who once were spread out from current Greece, to the Pontus, and down to Cyprus, were conquered and occupied by the Turks. Once the Greeks finally gained their independence, they seeked to liberate the rest of the Greeks and unite them with their new nation. This included Cyprus. It isn't at all similar to British colonial possessions. These people were throughly Greek and had finally gained independence from Britian. You can compare it to Irish independence and how they wanted to unite all of Ireland, including Northern Ireland. I guarantee if there was a referendum in Cyprus (excluding Northern Cyprus) to unite with Greece, there would be overwhelming support for this. It just isn't possible with treaties and such with Turkey and the British. They do not allow it.

Cyprus was over 80% Greek before the Turkish invasion so of course Greeks see that as just another land that was taken from them. Try to understand from their perspective.

  236.  @moguzd  they do. Numerous government officials have talked about invading and taking them. Many have even posted maps of Turkey with the Islands, Western Thrace, Crete, and Cyprus all belonging to Turkey. These are clear threats in my eyes. Erdogan has made this issue a lot worse. There was also all that trouble about the exclusive economic zones in the waters around these islands as another reason for Turkey to take them.

  238.  @moguzd  by the way, you bring up race a lot but I see Greeks and Turks as being practically the same race. The Turks were very outnumbered by the Greeks of Anatolia when they arrived. The Greeks were not kicked out, they slowly assimilated and mixed with the Turks. Genetic tests have been done and Greeks and Turks are practically racially identical, depending on the area of course. The further east into Anatolia, the less Greek.

  243.  @yaprakcetin5558  Anatolia was inhabited by many tribes and cultures that were very similar to Greek, likely very close cousins to the Greeks. They spoke similar languages, had similar gods, etc. For example the city of Troy was in Anatolia and as you know that is a very famous part of Greek history. This was all in very ancient history.. by the time the Turks came around, and long before that.. all of Anatolia was very thoroughly Greek. I also want to point out while Anatolia was not always exactly Greek in ancient ancient history, Cyprus was. It was settled by people from the Peloponnese (Achaea)

You say the Greeks copied the Egyptians? I think you are wrong here. Egyptians actually copied the Greeks following the conquests of Alexander the Great. Egypt became ruled by Greeks, same goes for Sumer. You keep bringing up that Anatolia was not always Greek, but remember it was Greek for much much longer than it was Turk.. so I'm not sure what justification you are trying to get from it.. but the same applies to the Turks

That is ancient ancient history, and by the time the Romans conquered Greece all of Anatolia was thoroughly Greek. You are talking about the Bronze age, which is waaay back. Either way like I said earlier, we are talking about Cyprus which was settled by people from the Peloponnese (Actual Greeks, and the precursors to the Spartans) so I don't know why you got so stuck on Anatolia for.. I'm not arguing to make Anatolia Greek again or something.

It isn't accurate that Greeks and Turks were living in harmony or something before these events. Turks massacred Greek villages, about 60 of them during the Greek war for indepence as well.

  247. You are being biased. The Turks weren't expelled from Cyprus, they just left to go to Northern Cyprus. They even were allowed to go back to their homes and collect all their things. Not the same for the Greeks who lost their homes, were forcefully expelled from Northern Cyprus and to this day aren't even allowed to collect their belongings. You mention ottoman sites being destroyed in Greece? You have any idea how many Greek sites were destroyed in Turkey? Remember your entire country used to be Greek..

  250. If it wasn't British it is likely that the Turks would have taken it long ago. There wouldn't be "harmony between the greeks and turks" as you say. Ever since the founding of the Republic of Turkey they have wanted that island back. 20 years before Turkey ended up invading the island, Turks in Istanbul were chanting "Cyprus is Turkish". I don't agree with any of that though. The island rightfully belongs to Greece since 80% of the population of the island were Greeks..

  255. I'm not justifying what the Greeks did, but you know why EOKA became hostile to Turks? It was after the 1955 Istanbul Pogrom happened. Pogrom means massacre btw. After this event and having Greeks being kicked out of Istanbul (Constantinople), Greeks all over the world became hostile to Turks. Funny thing too is that during this Pogrom, the Turks were chanting "Cyprus is Turkish"

The current Turkish government can learn a thing or two from their country's past. It is said a huge percentage of people from modern day Turkey are actually ethnically Greek who just slowly assimilated into Turkish culture over the centuries. This is the way it should be done.. not forceful expulsion and conversions.

Why take 40% of the land when not even 20% of the islands population were Turkish? They would have taken it all if they were able to, and kicked single Greek out..
